January has been ridiculous. There’s no better word for it. I have laugh, cried, and tore my hair out. Here’s how January has gone down.
Just a few days after Mike proposed, I start the wedding planning. We wanted to get married in 2015, so I knew I had to act fast. At least, that’s what everyone told me. It didn’t take long before I realized a beautiful wedding in St. Louis was not in our price range. I searched everywhere. Reception venues and ceremony sites were just too expensive. Enter mental breakdown. It was a Wednesday. I cried all morning long and told Mike we were going to have to elope somewhere, or get married in the courthouse. We were just too poor.
Thankfully, that very same day, after changing tactics and reexamining what was important to us, I found an all-inclusive venue about an hour and a half outside the city called Hermann Hill. It’s located in Missouri Wine Country, they offer a military discount, and we were able to save and pick a beautiful month like May because we chose a Sunday instead of a Saturday, but more on that in another post.
We also had to go to a third Christmas celebration during this time, which added to the insanity. Still, it’s always fun seeing family.
This is the chapel we’ll be getting married in. This photo is from their website.
The wedding questions begin. When’s the date? Where are you having it? No hotel attached? Oh my. No open bar?! Whoa… Who are your bridesmaids? Why aren’t you having a dinner? Appetizers won’t feed everyone! You’ve changed the date again!?
It was insane. And I didn’t have answers. I had called Hermann Hill, and they had invited us to check things out, try the food, and meet some of their vendors, but we hadn’t put a deposit down or discussed details yet. I was still very stressed. I think we also found our photographer around this time. It was nuts.
Around this same time, I was approached by the company I freelanced for in November about some additional work. Though I’m not worried about taking on another task, it does add to things I need to complete in February.
Mike and I fell in love with Hermann Hill after visiting, so we put down the deposit and set our date for May 31st. We made the official announcement the next day at our fourth and final family Christmas (another crazy day).
That same week, I set up an appointment to look for wedding dresses at a little boutique in Mike’s hometown. I also started looking for affordable DJ’s.
On a career note, I was quoted on how to use your blog for reputation management. It’s always exciting to be quoted somewhere online!
Plenty has happened this week too!
I found the wedding dress of my dreams for a solid price. We met with a DJ on Monday and he gave us a great deal for our wedding, so we booked him.
Yesterday, I had to go to the orthodontist for a braces check-up (did I mention I have braces). I told him we HAD to have the braces off by the wedding. He said it’s entirely possible, but I have to be vigilant about wearing my rubber bands. We’re working on moving my jaw where it needs to be. The teeth are basically in place. So that’s another goal of mine! WEAR THE DANG RUBBER BANDS!
And that’s how I spent January. Did you see all of my February to-do’s? It’s going to be twice as fun and busy!
